Private events

Gatherings of every kind

The house has hosted sea captains' dinners, sailors' suppers, family wakes and a great many weddings. It is very good at bringing people together, whatever the reason.

Rooms for a gathering

Most private events take place in one of two rooms. The Library, in the oldest part of the house, seats 14 at a single long table beside a working fireplace and is the right size for a family dinner, a shower luncheon or a board meeting with better snacks. The Great Hall, the tall, beamed room in the rear wing, seats 80 for dinner and holds 110 for a standing reception. From late spring to early fall, events can open onto the garden, and the Undertaker's Parlor, our bar, can be reserved for cocktail parties of up to 40 on Monday through Wednesday evenings.

All food is cooked by Chef Dee Okafor's kitchen, the same team behind The Ledger and the Lantern Room, and served by our own staff. Set menus start at $48 per guest for luncheons and $85 per guest for dinners. Food and beverage minimums apply to the Great Hall, and all events carry a 22% service charge and 7% tax.

Weekend dates from May through October are usually reserved for weddings first. Weekday and winter events have far more choice, and often better prices.

Bridal and baby showers

A shower in the Library feels like being invited to tea at a very old, very elegant aunt's house, if that aunt had a pastry chef. We set a long table with the good china, light the fire in cool weather, and serve a three-course luncheon or a proper afternoon tea with Abigail's lavender scones, finger sandwiches, Dee's smoked bluefish toasts, and a little cake. In summer, showers of up to 40 can take over the garden terrace for a garden-party lunch.

Showers run three hours, with time to open gifts at the table. Our staff will happily wrangle the ribbon bouquet. On Sundays, a short Tarot & Tea reading with Madame Corvina can be added for the guest of honor or the whole table, which is more fun than it has any right to be.

Rehearsal dinners and welcome parties

Whether you're marrying here or somewhere else in town, the night before is a good night to be at the Crane & Lantern House. Small rehearsal dinners of up to 14 fit around the Library's long table, where the toasts tend to be more honest and the stories longer. Larger welcome dinners of up to 80 take the Great Hall, family-style platters down the middle, a chowder course, and Dee's braised short rib or benne-crusted cod.

Couples marrying at the inn with the Grand Crane package can add a rehearsal dinner on the Friday evening of their buyout weekend. For guests arriving from far away, a welcome round of drinks in the Undertaker's Parlor, followed by the 8:00 pm Lantern Ghost Walk, makes an excellent first evening in Salem and a very good icebreaker for two families meeting properly for the first time.

Small retreats and offsites

From November through April, and on weekdays most of the year, the whole house can be yours. Nine guest rooms sleep a small team, a board, a writing group or a family reunion of up to about twenty, and the Library becomes a meeting room with a fireplace, a long table, a screen, and decent Wi-Fi (for a 1748 building). Breakfast is in the Lantern Room each morning, lunch is brought in, and dinner can be at The Ledger or privately in the Great Hall.

Between sessions, there are two pickleball courts behind the carriage house (paddles and balls free to borrow), six bikes for exploring the waterfront, croquet on the lawn, and the herb garden for walking off a working lunch. In the evenings, we can arrange a private Lantern Ghost Walk with Samuel, a candle-making workshop in the old apothecary workroom, or a round robin on the courts with our pro coach, Benny Ruiz. Teams that arrive barely speaking leave having argued cheerfully about line calls.

Birthdays, anniversaries and milestones

Fortieth birthdays, fiftieth anniversaries, retirements, graduations, and the occasional hundredth: we have hosted them all, and the house seems to enjoy them. A milestone dinner in the Library comes with a cake from our pastry kitchen, candles in every window, and if you like, a lantern lit in the top window for the evening. Larger parties take the Great Hall, with a band or a DJ until 11:00 pm and a late-night plate of brown-butter johnnycake sliders.

For a milestone with a bit of theater, our October Séance Supper on Fridays in the Great Hall is a memorable night out for groups (18 and over, $145 per person), and private séance-style dinners can be arranged in other months for groups of 20 or more. They are theatrical, warm and entirely in good fun.

Celebrations of life

For fifty-seven years, from 1889 to 1946, this house was the Hollis & Vane Funeral Parlor. Salem families came here to sit with the people they had lost, in the viewing parlor that is now our bar, and to say goodbye in the chapel that is now the Great Hall. The Hollis family lived upstairs. By every account we've found, they did their work with great kindness.

We think about that history more than you might expect, and it is one of the reasons we are glad to host gatherings after a loss. A celebration of life here is not a funeral service; we leave those to the professionals. It is a gathering afterward, or weeks later: a place for family and friends to share a meal, tell the stories, look through the photographs, and laugh at the parts that deserve it.

We keep it simple. A room for as long as you need it, often the Library for a small family or the Great Hall for a larger community. A buffet or family-style lunch from Dee's kitchen, which can include a favorite dish of the person you are remembering if you tell us about it. Coffee and tea throughout, a bar if you would like one, a table for photographs and keepsakes, and a microphone for anyone who wants to speak. Our staff are quiet, practiced and unhurried.

We understand these gatherings often come together quickly, and we will always do our best to find a weekday date within a week or two. Call Wren directly at (978) 555-0148 and she will take care of the details, so you don't have to fill out a form at a time like this.

Luncheons from $42 per guest · no room fee on weekdays

We held my father's gathering in the Great Hall on a Tuesday in March. The staff put his old sailing photographs in frames along the windows without being asked, and the chef made his mother's fish cakes from a recipe card I'd mentioned once on the phone. It was the first time in weeks that our family laughed together.
