The Lantern Room in morning light: small tables in the old front parlor and the glassed porch beyond

Open to the publicWednesday–Sunday, 7:30–11:00 am

Breakfast is first come, first served. We do not take reservations for breakfast, for guests or for the public, and we never have; the room has eleven tables and the porch has six more, and we would rather seat you than file you. Inn guests are given priority when there is a wait, which is the one perk of having slept upstairs that we can offer without a spreadsheet.

Public breakfast is not served on Mondays and Tuesdays, when the room belongs to the inn's own guests and the menu is a little shorter (the johnnycakes stay on; we are not monsters).

October weekends: the wait for a table can run 45 minutes to an hour after 8:30. In October, "first come" means about 7:15. Inn guests should come down when they are ready; your table is held in a different way. Everyone else, bring a coat, put your name on the slate by the porch door, and walk down to the harbor. We'll text you.

The room

The Lantern Room is the old front parlor of the 1748 house, the room where Captain Josiah Crane received merchants and, presumably, complained about the price of molasses. It has its original raised-panel walls, a fireplace we light from November to April, and two front windows facing Mercy Lane with glass that has gone faintly wavy in the way old glass does. In 1997 the Fairweathers enclosed the side porch in glass, and on a clear morning it is the brightest room in the house.

The name comes from Abigail Crane's lantern, which for eleven years after 1801 burned in the top window, three floors above where you'll be eating. We keep a lantern on the mantel in her honor. It is electric, for the insurance company's sake.

The ramp to the porch door on the garden side gives step-free access to the Lantern Room; please see our accessibility page for details.

If you're staying with us

Breakfast is included in every room rate, for every guest in the room. Come down any time between 7:30 and 10:00 on weekdays, 8:00 and 10:30 on weekends; you do not need to tell us in advance. If you need to be out the door before 7:30 for an early train, ask at the front desk the night before and Samuel's team will leave a basket at your door: a scone, fruit, a yogurt, and a thermos of coffee. It is not the same as johnnycakes, but it travels better.

Guests in the Carriage House Suite are welcome to bring their dogs to the porch tables, which are the dog-friendly part of the room. Water bowls on request; bacon at the dog's own risk.

Dietary needs are easiest to manage if you tell us when you book. Dee has cooked for vegans, coeliacs, a guest with a nightshade allergy, and once a gentleman who would eat only things that were white. All left fed.

Costume brunch, last Sunday of October

Once a year, the Lantern Room becomes a brunch: the last Sunday in October, with a longer menu, a pianist in the hall, and a great many people dressed as other people. Unlike regular breakfast, the costume brunch is by reservation only, and it fills by early September. Costumes encouraged, not required. Please, no masks at the table; the servers need to know whom to give the coffee. See October at the inn.

We came for the ghost walk and stayed an extra day for the johnnycakes. I'm not proud of it.

Breakfast questions

Can I reserve a table for breakfast?

No. Breakfast is walk-in only, including for larger groups. Parties of six or more may have a longer wait while we put tables together, and in October we can't seat more than eight together on a weekend morning.

Is breakfast open to people who aren't staying at the inn?

Yes, Wednesday through Sunday from 7:30 to 11:00 am. Inn guests have priority when there's a wait.

Do you serve lunch in the Lantern Room?

No; lunch is served next door in The Ledger from 11:30 am, Wednesday to Sunday. If you're lingering over coffee at 11:05 we won't hurry you, but the kitchen will have moved on.

Can I buy a dozen scones to take home?

On weekdays, usually; call by 9 am on (978) 555-0148 and we'll set them aside. On October weekends, regrettably not.
